Analysis on the Development of Silicone Mastic Sealant Used in Construction

With the modernization of urban construction, there is a growing demand for energy-saving, waterproofing, thermal insulation, sound insulation, and comfort in buildings. The sealing of joints has become increasingly important in the construction industry, which has led to the development of building joint sealants. In particular, silicone mastic sealant has experienced rapid development in the past decade, which has catered to the sealing installation and decoration of aluminum and plastic doors and windows, and has also promoted the development of new building technologies, products, and structures such as glass curtain walls, insulated glass, external wall panels, and metal frame bonding structures. Currently, there are increasingly functional varieties of silicone mastic sealants, and the product standards continue to be updated and improved. Moreover, new modified silicone sealants are being developed by silicone products manufacturer, with production accounting for two-thirds of total building sealant production, and some exports starting to appear, making the market competition more intense.

The continuous expansion of building needs drives the growth of silicone mastic sealant

Since the 1980s, there has been a fundamental change in the scale, speed, and structure of construction. The height, volume, and size of components of buildings far exceed those of traditional buildings with brick walls and tiled roofs. Prefabricated floor slabs and wall panels have been widely used. Particularly, the area of windows has significantly increased, and aluminum and plastic doors and windows are commonly used. The displacement of joints of building structures and components has increased, which has led to the gradual elimination of traditional building sealants with low displacement ability and lack of durability. Multi-purpose silicone sealant with stable heat resistance and low-temperature flexibility, weather resistance, excellent adhesion to glass, and convenient extrusion for single-component use, quick bonding, and curing, was quickly accepted and widely used in the construction industry. For the elastic bonding assembly of building structures such as glass curtain walls, stone, and metal curtain walls, sealants must be able to transmit structural stress and bear the building load, which has made silicone structural sealants an important engineering material in these buildings.

Technological progress promotes the development of silicone mastic sealant

Silicone based sealant is a moisture-curing product, and strict control of the water content of materials and isolation from contact with air during production is the key to ensuring product quality. High-load vacuum bi-axis kneader, vacuum mixer, gantry extruder, continuous automatic filling machine, and supporting synthesis, drying, and homogenization equipment are the basic equipment of the production line, and the sealing packaging of products uses a production of hard plastic tube automatic filling machine and aluminum-plastic composite film soft packaging machine. Manual glue guns, pneumatic glue guns, and two-component sealant automatic mixing and injection machines for sealing construction, as well as plastic and paper-plastic composite packaging materials, can also be produced and supplied.

Acidic silicone-based sealant has excellent adhesion to glass but is not suitable for concrete, stone, and metal joints. With a deepening understanding, its application scope will be limited. Currently, neutral sealants such as alcohol and deoxidation types are developing rapidly, and functional varieties and production are constantly expanding. Among them, the market share of multi-purpose silicone sealants and weather-resistant sealants for glass joints is showing a significant increase. New functional products such as neutral building stone sealants, anti-fungal sealants, fire-resistant sealants, and metal roofing and pipeline sealants have been launched into the market. In addition, modified silicone products have begun to move from development to industrial production, including wet-curing sealants based on terminal siloxane-based polyether polymers and siloxane-terminated polyether urethane-modified sealants. Currently, the total amount of neutral sealants, including structural sealants, has exceeded tens of thousands of tons, which has begun to change the market proportion of the acidic silicone-based sealant.
