General Principles for Selecting Organosilane Coupling Agents

Ⅰ. The pre-selection of organosilane coupling agents shall follow the following rules

1. Vinyl, epoxy and methacryloyloxy organosilane coupling agents can be selected for unsaturated polyester.

2. Epoxy or amino organosilane coupling agents should be selected for epoxy resin.

3. Amino or urea based organosilane coupling agent should be selected for phenolic resin.

4. Vinyl organosilane coupling agent should be selected for olefin polymer.

5. Sparse organosilane coupling agents should be selected for sulfur vulcanized rubber.

Ⅱ. Principles of selecting organosilane coupling agents

When selecting silane coupling agent, it should be noted that while the coupling agent reacts with the polymer, there are also the reaction of the polymer itself and the self polymerization reaction of the coupling agent. If the reaction speed between the coupling agent and the polymer is too slow, the ideal effect can not be achieved.

It is necessary to comprehensively consider the composition of the material and its sensitivity to the reaction of silane coupling agent. In order to improve hydrolysis stability and reduce modification cost, trialkylsilane can be added into silane agent; For hard-to-bond materials, polymers crosslinked with organosilane coupling agents can also be shared.

When organosilane coupling agents are used as tackifier, they mainly form chemical bond and hydrogen bond with polymer; Wetting and surface energy effect: it is realized by improving polymer crystallinity, acid-base reaction and the formation of interpenetrating polymer network. The viscosity enhancement mainly focuses on the three systems below:

1. Inorganic materials to organic materials;

2. Inorganic materials to inorganic materials;

3. Organic materials to organic materials.

For the first bonding system, inorganic materials are usually required to be bonded to the polymer, so the reaction activity between Y in silane coupling agent and the functional groups contained in the polymer should be given priority: the latter two belong to the bonding between the same type of materials, so the anti-hydrophilic polymer of silane agent itself and the organosilane coupling agent are selected when inorganic materials require viscosity increase.
