Using silane coupling agent KH550 to improve the compatibility between wood powder and resin

Adding wood powder to resin or waste plastic, and then adding a certain proportion of silane coupling agent KH550 for surface modification treatment, is used to produce a new type of composite material - wood-plastic material through heating and forming. As the wood powder contains hydroxyl groups, these hydroxyl groups form intermolecular hydrogen bonds or intramolecular hydrogen bonds, making the wood powder highly hygroscopic, with a moisture content of up to 10%, and a high polarity. Most thermoplastic plastics are non-polar and hydrophobic, so the compatibility between the two is poor, and the bonding force at the interface is small.


Using high-quality silane coupling agents KH550 to modify the surface of polymer-wood powder can improve the interfacial affinity between wood powder and resin, and the modified wood powder filler has enhanced properties, which can transfer stress between filler and resin, thus enhancing the strength of the composite material. Therefore, to obtain high-performance and qualified plastic-wood composite materials, the compatibility between materials must be solved. Adding silane coupling agents like KH550 can change the inherent hydrophilicity of wood powder surface, making it easier to effectively combine with resin.

The development and research of wood powder and waste plastic composite materials can not only provide opportunities for fully utilizing natural resources, but also reduce environmental pollution caused by waste plastics. Its application range is also very wide, mainly in building materials, the automobile industry, packaging and transportation of goods, decorative materials, and daily life utensils, etc., with broad development prospects. As an organic filler for plastics, wood powder has many excellent properties that other inorganic fillers cannot match: wide source, low price, low density, good insulation, and small wear on processing equipment. With the continuous development of wood-plastic composite technology and the increasing demand for environmental protection, wood-plastic composite technology has transitioned to the production of wood-plastic composite materials using multi-component waste plastics and wood powder blends. However, it has not been widely used like inorganic fillers, mainly due to poor compatibility with the matrix resin, poor dispersion effect in molten thermoplastic plastics, poor flowability, and difficult extrusion molding processing. Improving the inherent defects of composite materials requires the use of silane coupling agents KH550 to improve the dispersion performance of wood powder, allowing it to be uniformly distributed in the resin, greatly enhancing the strength of the wood-plastic material.

According to the silicone product supplier, the amount of silane coupling agent KH550 is related to the surface area of powder particles, and the proportion of adding is not directly proportional to the activation effect of the filler. Wood powder particles are not in an ideal state of individual dispersion in the matrix, but in the form of certain aggregation state. The effect of aggregated wood powder on the flowability of the filling system is unfavorable, and an appropriate amount of dispersant can be added to reduce the aggregation quantity of the wood powder particles, improve the clustering phenomenon, and fully disperse the powder in the resin. In addition, plastic-wood composite materials belong to pseudo-plastic fluids in the molten state. As the shear rate increases, the apparent viscosity decreases. Therefore, in order to make the filling system have good flowability, higher shear stress should be used as much as possible to reduce the shear viscosity of the filling system, making it suitable for extrusion molding processing. Ganosilane coupling agents KH550 can not only improve the compatibility between inorganic powders and thermosetting resins but also improve the interface characteristics between wood powder and resin. Experimental results have shown that silane coupling agent KH550 is an essential surface modifier in the production process of wood-plastic materials, playing a decisive role.
